Next Year in Havana by Chanel Cleeton

This story is about a Cuban-American woman living in Miami and visiting Cuba for the first time and learning more about where she came from and what her grandparents went through before coming to the U.S. It’s a story of family relationships, romance, history, and sacrifice.

It’s based on a second generation Cuban-American journalist based in Miami who travels to Cuba for the first time. During her visit she discovers more of herself and her family, while also discovering a few family secrets. It’s told in current day and a simultaneous story line told in the viewpoint of the main character’s grandmother in the late 1950s in Cuba.

If you’re of Cuban decent, this book will shed light on many of the stories you might have heard around your family dinner table while growing up. It will also bring up a few new topics that you might not have totally understood before. This is a story that will stay with you, and one you’ll want to pass down for generations to come. If you’re not of Cuban decent, it’s a beautiful story to understand the complexities of the Cuban-American love story and turmoil, plus there’s a beautiful love story and family story, too.
