Powdered Sunscreen

If there’s one thing you should know about good skincare, it’s that you should be wearing sunscreen daily. And, if taking better care of your skin is on your resolution list for 2023, we have one product you won’t want to miss.

For many, wearing sunscreen under your makeup can seem burdensome because so many either pill, feel heavy, or don’t work well with makeup. And, if you’re depending on the sunscreen in your makeup to keep you safe, the sad truth is that it isn’t nearly enough. We don’t apply enough of the makeup to get the full coverage listed. If you’re looking for sunscreen that I have enjoyed wearing as makeup or under makeup, check these out.

But, for now, I have another favorite product to share with you—powder sunscreen. This is a great option for reapplication as it’s mess-free and easy to take with you in your purse. Some provide a little bit of color-correcting coverage, while others are translucent. They’re also a great last step to use over your makeup to make sure you’re getting a little extra added coverage. That doesn’t mean that powder sunscreen should be your only source of sun protection, but it is a convenient one.

If you have little ones at home who hate to wear the white sticky stuff on their face, this is also a good option for them if you’re out-and-about or at an afterschool sport.

So let’s get to it, here are three of my favorite powder sunscreen.

#1 Tarte SEA Set & Protect Mineral Powder Broad Spectrum SPF 30

This is the easiest to use of all of them as it has a clicker which dispenses the powder onto the brush. To me, this had a light vanilla smell, which I loved. The scent is a natural fragrance that’s rich with antioxidant properties that target the signs of aging. It’s a vegan product without any chemical sunscreen filters, which is great for those with sensitive skin. It’s also free of parabens, formaldehydes, phthalates, mineral oil, and triclosan. You can use this as a sunscreen, and to set your makeup, as it’s translucent when applied.

Price: $29.00 (on sale at Sephora $14)

#2 Colorescience’s Sunforgettable Total Protection Brush On Shield SPF 50

I really liked this one, and it’s made from a suncare/skincare company. For this one, you have four color options to choose from that best fit your complexion—fair, medium, tan, and deep. I used the medium one. They also recently released a glow option which gives you a nice glowy finish. I haven’t used this one yet, but if it’s anything like their liquid glow sunscreen formula, I’m sure it’ll be amazing. They also released a bronze option, which you can use for contouring or brozing, or to add an little extra color when you have a bit more of a tan.

This one is a little tougher to use as you have to tap the bottle with the cap on to make the product dispense into the brush bristles. At times I wish more product would come out than it did, but it was a great way to set my makeup or get a little color on days when I wasn’t wearing anything other than my liquid sunscreen. It’s also an all-mineral, chemical-free product—great for sensitive skin that can be used alone or over makeup. If you’re being active outdoors, this one is water and sweat resistant for up to 80 minutes. And, according to their website, it’s the only brush-on powder sunscreen recommended by the Skin Cancer Foundation as an effective broad spectrum sunscreen.

On the Colorescience website, there is a special where you can mix and match a custom trio for $138, a $207 value. This includes one of the four skin tone options available, sheer matte, glow, or bronze options.

# 3 Derma-E’s Sun Protection Mineral Powder SPF 30

This one is like the ColorScience one, where you have to tap the applicator in order for product to dispense. I also find this one more difficult to use as not enough product seems to come out for me when I tap it.

According to their website, this product has Chamomile extract, which helps soothe and calm the skin, it also delivers antioxidants with green tea, and protects from UVA/UVB rays. This product is also vegan as well. This is also great to use with or without makeup and can add a flawless finish when used after makeup. I’ve used it to set my makeup and get a little extra protection. It’s so easy to use that I’ve taken this with me to outdoor events and reapplied on-the-go when I’m out in the sun too long.

I decided to use this one because it was the least expensive of the three, and my dermatologist had recently recommended I use the Vitamin C from this brand as it was a good brand to use for my rosacea-prone skin.

If you haven’t heard of Derma-E, they began in health food stores in Southern California. It is now one of the largest natural face care brands in the U.S. and you can find them at Ulta, Target, Sprouts, and online.

Price: 23.95 ($20.13 on Amazon)
